African wooden fertility statue, Nigerian mother and child, 50cm tall
Hand-carved solid wooden statue from the Yoruba people of Nigeria, West Africa, representing a seated fertility figure of a mother nursing a child. These statues, known as “Ibeji” or “maternity figures”, are traditionally associated with fertility, motherhood, protection, and ancestral blessings.
This particular carving, likely early 20ᵗʰ century (circa 1940‑1960s) was crafted from hardwood, most likely iroko, commonly used in West African sculpture. With natural patina and signs of age such as wear, cracks or finish loss reflective of authentic use.
