Italian rococo revival lidded vase with floral reliefs and gold accents
Elegant Italian lidded vase marked Made in Italy, produced around the 1950s–1960s. The piece is crafted in the Rococo Revival style, popular in mid-20th-century Italy, characterized by ornate floral reliefs, gold accents, and romantic pastoral scenes inspired by 18th-century art. The vase features a rich embossed surface with gilded details and a central medallion depicting a courting couple – a gentleman playing a mandolin to a seated lady beneath a parasol – a motif reminiscent of François Boucher’s Rococo paintings. This type of decorative ceramic was produced in northern Italy, likely in the Capodimonte or Bassano region, known for refined porcelain artistry and luxurious export pieces. During this post-war period, Italian makers revived Baroque and Rococo influences, creating elegant yet accessible home decor for European and American markets. The vase was intended as a statement decorative object, often displayed on mantels or sideboards as a centerpiece. Each piece of this type was slightly unique, differing in hand-applied reliefs and glaze tone.
