Balinese hand carved wood figures, Fisherman and rice farmer

A pair of vintage hand-carved wooden figurines originating from Bali, Indonesia, produced as part of the island’s well-known handicraft tradition during the mid-20th century (circa 1950–1970). 

The figures are carved from dense tropical hardwood, most likely suar wood (sometimes historically marketed in Europe as Coromandel wood), which is recognizable by its dark tone and contrasting natural grain patterns. The expressive carving style  reflects the typical Balinese folk carving tradition that developed around craft centers such as Ubud and Gianyar.

The subjects represent scenes from everyday village life that are central to Balinese culture. One figure depicts a fisherman with a net, symbolizing the importance of coastal livelihoods and the island’s long maritime traditions. The second figure represents a rice farmer harvesting rice, referencing Bali’s historic rice-growing culture and the traditional agricultural system that has shaped Balinese society for centuries.

Figures of fishermen and farmers were among the most popular themes in Balinese handicraft carving, as they illustrated the balance between sea and land, two essential elements of life on the island.

Condition: One figure shows a broken / missing harvesting tool, consistent with age and handling.
